Formed in San Diego, Mrs. Magician draws on punk, surf, garage rock, and power pop for its sound. The lineup includes singer and songwriter Jacob Turnbloom along with guitarists Tommy Garcia and Farmer, bassist Jordan Clark, and drummer Cory Stier. Before the group came together, Turnbloom had performed in the synth rock outfit First Wave Hello, whose debut album The Lord & Its Penguin earned a nomination for the 2007 San Diego Music Award, and had also played in the post-punk band Blessure Grave. Garcia, Stier, Farmer, and Clark had previously appeared together in the local band Drug Wars. Once united as Mrs. Magician, they issued their first single, “There Is No God,” in 2010 and followed it with additional material that appeared on their debut album, the reverb-drenched Strange Heaven, issued in 2012 on Swami Records and produced by John Reis. In 2013 the band put out a set of B-sides cut during those Strange Heaven sessions, then released a 45 through Windian Records the next year. Turnbloom simultaneously developed solo work, issuing a thirty-song album in 2012 and a single on Thrill Me Records in 2015. Mrs. Magician resurfaced in 2016 with Bermuda, an album that adopted a leaner, power pop-oriented approach.
