Biography
Mwahaha leans into playful yet peculiar sounds, a fitting approach given a band name that evokes a cartoon villain's cackle and an ensemble that deliberately mixes electronic drums, MIDI samplers, and vintage synthesizers with standard guitar or bass. Multi-instrumentalists Ross Peacock, Nathan Tilton, and Cyrus Tilton formed the group in Oakland, California. Their habit of leaping between genres and testing new approaches prompted listeners to draw parallels with electronic acts such as the Silver Apples and Matthew Dear as well as experimental indie bands like Grandaddy and TV on the Radio. The self-titled debut album appeared in 2012. After a strong SXSW showcase that year and favorable mentions from NPR and Spin Magazine, L.A. label Plug Research issued a 2013 re-release that added bonus tracks.
