A progressive metal ensemble hailing from Zurich, Switzerland, Mycelia fuses djent, deathcore, jazz, and classic film scores into a sound that feels both punishing and expansive. The six-piece Swiss outfit launched its career in 2012 with elaborate compositions and forceful yet memorable melodies that echoed the approaches of Veil of Maya and Between the Buried and Me. Later releases such as Obey (2015) and Apex (2018) drew from unexpected stylistic and thematic wells, the latter issued on U.S.-based Eclipse Records and marking the band’s growing international profile.

The project originated in 2010 when guitarist Mike Schmid and drummer Marc Trummer began writing together, soon adding vocalist Marc Fürer. Two digital EPs preceded the full-length debut Isolator in 2012. The following year brought the severe Nova, yet it was the third album, Obey, that positioned the group as a standout within Switzerland’s progressive metalcore community. That record merged the rapid-fire riffs and rhythmic intensity of earlier work with greater technical sophistication and broader stylistic range, a direction pursued even further on 2017’s Dawn. By then the lineup had grown to six members through the arrival of guitarist Mike Fuller, bassist Eugen Wiege, and co-vocalist Lukas Villiger. New Jersey-based Eclipse Records took notice of Dawn and signed the band in early 2018; Apex, its fifth studio album and first for the label, appeared that October.
