Mythic Sunship

Danish psych-rock outfit Mythic Sunship emerged from Copenhagen in 2010, selecting their name through a fusion of Sun Ra's Of Mythic Worlds and Coltrane's Sun Ship. Their approach merges the interstellar voyages of 1970s Krautrock and free jazz with the force of early proto-metal, yielding a denser form of exploratory instrumental rock. Dark and druggy textures define their output, built around extended jams in which guitar riffs dissolve into echoing masses, later augmented by explosive saxophone within dense feedback fields. Exceptionally active, the group maintains a steady flow of new material that reshapes their psychedelic reach, as heard on the sixth studio album Light/Flux issued in 2022.

Bassist Rasmus Cleve Christensen, guitarists Emil Thorenfeldt and Kasper Stougaard Andersen, and drummer Frederik Denning comprise the lineup. Their loose jamming on standard hard-rock gear sometimes adopts an almost punk roughness while pursuing spiritually attuned free music. Earliest recordings surfaced as limited cassettes and CD-Rs through assorted D.I.Y. imprints. A partnership with El Paraiso commenced with the wide-release album Ouroboros in 2016, followed less than a year later by Land Between Rivers. Two further records arrived in 2018: the expansive Upheaval and the double-album Another Shape of Psychedelic Music, the latter more agitated in character. Changing Shapes, a live set drawn from three 2019 Roadburn Festival appearances, surfaced in 2020 as a temporary bridge while listeners awaited the next studio effort. That arrived with April 2021's Wildfire, an especially turbulent stage in their progression. Sixth studio album Light/Flux followed in September 2022, extending the stormy and unsettled motifs the band had pursued from the outset.
