Emerging from Seattle, Washington in 2015, Naked Giants fused fuzzed-out power pop riffs from the 1970s with deep psych-rock textures and raw blues-punk aggression in their garage punk sound. New West Records signed the group and released their first full-length album, Sluff, in 2018. Guitarist/vocalist Grant Mullen, bassist/vocalist Gianni Aiello, and drummer Henry LaVallee formed the trio, which became noted for its high-energy live shows. Their debut single, "Easy Eating," appeared in 2016, and Miscreant Records issued the R.I.P. EP soon after. New West took notice and inked a deal the next year. Producer Steve Fisk, known for work with Nirvana and the Posies, helmed Sluff, after which the band toured with Will Toledo's Car Seat Headrest and served as their backing musicians. The Green Fuzz EP followed in 2019, and the 2020 sophomore album The Shadow arrived next. Decemberists multi-instrumentalist Chris Funk produced the eleven-track set, which expanded the group's palette to include post-punk and new wave elements.
