With a sound that both embodies and reshapes Pacific Northwest aesthetics, the Washington State trio Naomi Punk originated as Travis Coster’s solo endeavor before expanding to encompass Neil Gregerson and Nicolas Luempert. Through self-released CD-Rs and cassettes, the Olympia- and Seattle-based group cultivated a heavy yet free-flowing approach rooted in grunge and earlier influences, allowing traces of the Wipers, Beat Happening, and Nirvana to surface at any moment, and issued their self-titled official debut album in 2009. Over the following years the band maintained a steady touring schedule while logging 14 months in the studio. Their initial new material surfaced late in 2011 via the Spell single, which previewed the second album, The Feeling, issued by Couple Skate in April 2012. Captured Tracks gave the album a November re-release that appended the B-side of the Eon of Pain single, itself released the previous month, as an additional track. The trio resurfaced in 2014 with the somewhat more refined Television Man, which Captured Tracks brought out that August. Most of the subsequent two years went into crafting the anarchic double album Yellow, released in 2017 and featuring contributions from both Naomi Punk and their Scorpions alter ego along with found sounds and library music.
