Ned's Atomic Dustbin

Ned's Atomic Dustbin blended punk and funk with a distinctive flair that attracted a solid audience in the early 1990s, coinciding with the decline of England's Madchester movement sparked by the Stone Roses. The lineup featured Jonn Penney on vocals, Rat on guitar, Matt Cheslin and Alex Griffin handling the dual basses, and Dan Warton on drums. The musicians initially formed as a neo-goth rock act during the late 1980s. Entering the new decade, they forged a dense, assaultive approach defined by their powerful two-bass attack. Their debut single, "Kill Your Television," appeared in 1990; backed by an aggressive promotional campaign that included 86 T-shirts created within the band's first three years, it climbed to the U.K. Top 50 and secured a deal with Sony Music. God Fodder, their first album, arrived in 1991 and debuted at number four on the charts. Throughout the year the group circled the globe while issuing further singles from that record. Although they retained strong popularity at home, the ensemble attracted no more than a cult following stateside. The 1992 follow-up Are You Normal? likewise failed to broaden their reach. On Brainbloodvolume, issued in 1995, Ned's Atomic Dustbin attempted to broaden their signature approach through techno explorations, yet the effort met with commercial disappointment.
