Negura Bunget

Taking cues from Sweden's Bathory, among the earliest European acts to channel national lore into their material through Norse and Viking motifs, Negura Bunget fuse Romanian history and folklore into an otherworldly musical journey rooted in their Transylvanian origins. The ensemble surfaced during the mid-'90s via the regionally embraced Zîrnindu-Să before igniting wider attention in 2006 through the double concept album OM, which distilled their singular fusion of folk and black metal. Though repeated personnel shifts marked their trajectory, the outfit sustained output with acclaimed releases such as Vîrstele Pămîntului (2010) and Zi (2016), the latter marking their concluding effort after the 2017 passing of co-founder and drummer Negru (Gabriel Mafa).

Established in 1995 in Bucharest by Hupogrammos Disciple (vocals, guitar, keyboards) and Negru (drums, xylophone) as Wiccan Rede, the project laid down its initial demo, "From Transylvania Forest," at Magic Sound Studios aided by keyboardist Aiwazz Valah Disciple. Upon adopting the Negura Bunget moniker the next year, the musicians commenced regular performances and captured their debut full-length Zîrnindu-Să in October 1996 while progressively embedding ancestral themes to shape a distinctive black metal lens. The Sala Molksa EP appeared in 1998, after which bassist Vampir and keyboardist Daniel (succeeding Aiwazz) augmented the live configuration. Third album Maiastru Sfelnic surfaced in 2000, prompting broader touring and a subsequent agreement with Italy's Code 666 imprint. The 2002 release 'N Crugu Bradului incorporated guitarist Sol Faur Spurcatu and bassist Ursu, spanning nearly an hour across four tracks thematically centered on the numeral four within natural, cosmic, and conscious frameworks; it elevated the band's stature and drew progressive metal and post-rock listeners. Negura Bunget extended this phase with the Inarborat Kosmos EP and further road work, previewing compositions destined for their defining early-2000s statement.

Issued on Code 666 in 2006, OM surprised and energized audiences through its scope and architecture, interlacing noise, raw atmospheric black metal, folk metal, and progressive industrial and ambient textures into a continuous hour-long sequence artificially segmented into tracks and hailed by critics as a standout of the period. The group mounted a European tour in spring 2007, followed by more than forty additional concerts across the continent and another in late autumn. Following a brief hiatus they revisited the festival circuit in the second half of 2008, appearing at Wacken Open Air, Summerbreeze, Artmania Festival, Kaltenbach Open Air, Rockmania Festival, and Paalisare Rock Fest. During this span drummer Negru launched the side project Din Brad. The band divided into separate factions in 2009; Negru retained the Negura Bunget name and began working with successive lineups, while Hupogrammos and Sol Faur formed Dordeduh. Prior to the split they completed Măiestrit, a reinterpretation of the earlier Măiastru Sfetnic, which Prophecy Productions issued in January 2010 ahead of Vîrstele Pămîntului on Code 666 in March. The refreshed roster under Negru logged extensive spring and summer touring, resumed in autumn after a pause, and accumulated seventy-two performances that year alongside the two albums.

Marking the ensemble's fifteenth anniversary in 2011, a surge of activity included the concert film and album Focul Viu, captured in Bucharest in January 2008 with the classic trio and additional musicians, followed by the Poarta de Dincolo EP, their last for Code 666. They traversed Romania and Europe for the remainder of the year, then undertook first Canadian and American tours in spring 2012 before returning to European stages that summer; Negru's Din Brad also delivered its debut album Dor. After further road commitments and another interval, the EP Gînd A-Prins arrived in autumn 2013, succeeded by intensified touring through the following year. In 2015 the band unveiled TĂU, opening installment of the Transilvanian Trilogy, an elaborate package featuring a seventy-two-page booklet with select editions adding a bonus disc; the release paved the way for a second North American trek and European festival headlining slots that summer. Returning to the studio in early 2016, they completed ZI, the trilogy's second chapter, released in September. On 21 March 2017 Negru, aged forty-two, succumbed to a heart attack, leaving no founding members. Although Negura Bunget effectively concluded, plans proceeded for the unfinished third trilogy installment slated for 2019.
