Biography
Wyrd, a Finnish black metal ensemble co-founded in the late 1990s by Narqath—real name Tomi Kalliola and formerly the multi-instrumentalist of Azaghal—initially delivered a frigid, thrash-driven sound. Over time that approach evolved into atmospheric black metal colored by pagan folk and doom influences, as heard on the 2007 album Kammen and the 2016 release Death of the Sun.
The band first operated under the Hellkult name with fellow ex-Azaghal member Kalma, issuing three thrash-oriented demos from 1997 to 1998. After the final demo Of Pure Heathen Blood, Kalma exited, leading Narqath to relaunch the project as Wyrd, an Old English word meaning fate. He introduced gloomier, more atmospheric textures and thematic focus on Nordic mythology and folklore, recording further demos until Millennium Metal signed the group and released its official debut, Heathen, in 2001.
Huldrafolk appeared the following year. A two-part, narrative-driven double album titled Vargtimmen then surfaced, with The Inmost Night issued in 2003 and Ominous Insomnia arriving in 2004. Drummer JL Nokturnal joined in 2005 and made his recorded debut on that year’s Rota. The Ghost Album followed in 2006 as the project’s sixth full-length. Kammen arrived in 2007, marking the duo’s first release for Avantgarde Music; Kalivägi came two years later. In 2016 the band moved to Moribund Records for Death of the Sun and returned to the label in 2019 with Vargtimmen, Pt. 1.
