Biography
Born in England, Russo entered the spotlight in 2002 when record labels promoted her as the British counterpart to leading American R&B acts of the era, among them Alicia Keys and Sunshine Anderson. As the child of Jerry Stevens, the 60s singer and comedian, she encountered soul and funk icons from a young age through appearances on her father’s television program. During her school years she acquired skills on multiple instruments and honed her Latin dance technique to the point of certification as a salsa instructor. Her initial entry into the music industry came through a partnership with producer Eg White, previously known for his work in the indie rock duo Eg And Alice. That partnership extended to recordings with Rae And Christian and the Ignorants, all while carving out time to lay down tracks for her debut album, Through My Eyes. Captured across studios in England and America, the project appeared on Telstar Records in July 2002. Although her expressive vocals defined songs such as ‘You Might Be Wrong’ and ‘Don’t Wanna Let You Go’, the record introduced little that distinguished it from the established urban template already perfected by her more accomplished American peers.
