Biography
Since the early 2000s, Carmen Rodgers has contributed to numerous independent R&B projects. Her performances blend animated and mellow vocals with direct songwriting that spans an extensive emotional range. Solo releases encompass the albums Free (2004) and Stargazer (2015) alongside the EP Hello Human, Vol. 1 (2021). Across most of her professional path she has remained closely tied to the Foreign Exchange and Lorenzo "Zo!" Ferguson.
Born in Mississippi, raised in Texas, and now based in Brooklyn after time in Atlanta, Rodgers entered the scene in 2003 with "Ain't No Time," a flowing slow jam included on Hidden Beach's Hidden Hits, Vol. 1 compilation. A separate take of the track opened her debut album Free, released independently the next year. Additional selections from Free later surfaced on various compilations, while "Just Believe" appeared on the soundtrack for the basketball documentary 25 Strong.
Following a long hiatus, she returned in 2010 with the EP The Bitter Suite. During that same stretch she developed a close alliance with the Foreign Exchange, performing and recording alongside the group and Zo!, whose initial joint appearances came on Zo!'s ManMade and FE's Love in Flying Colors, both issued within a four-month span in 2013.
Rodgers reached peak recording activity in 2015. Stargazer arrived via Purpose Music Group that February and was followed by contributions to Nicolay's City Lights, Vol. 3: Soweto and FE's Tales from the Land of Milk and Honey. Over the ensuing years she participated in assorted FE-related projects, worked with Anthony David and Jermaine Hardsoul, and regularly performed with Zo!, either as the duo billed Zo! + Carmen Rodgers: "Piano & a Microphone" or supported by a full band. Toward the end of 2020 she issued the Nicolay-produced single "Again and Again," which preceded the February 2021 arrival of Hello Human, Vol. 1.
