Biography
Gordon Chambers has long been a recognizable credit among devotees of contemporary R&B who examine liner notes from releases dating back to the early 1990s. He first gained recognition strictly as a songwriter, achieving his breakthrough in 1994 through Brownstone’s “If You Love Me,” the Top Ten pop hit he co-wrote with producer Dave “Jam” Hall and Nichole Gilbert of the group. Over a span exceeding two decades, he supplied songs to a notable roster that includes Phyllis Hyman, Anita Baker, Brandy, Aaron Neville, Whitney Houston, and Beyoncé, along with dozens more performers. While maintaining his behind-the-scenes work as a writer and producer in the early 2000s, Chambers launched his own independent recording career grounded in classic R&B craftsmanship. His first album, Introducing... (2004), included a rendition of “I Apologize,” the song he created with Anita Baker and Barry Eastmond; Baker’s original recording earned a Grammy and reached the Top Ten on the R&B chart. Following the releases of Love Stories (2007) and Sincere (2011), Chambers endured multiple family losses, a destructive fire, and uncertainty over whether he would continue making records. He nevertheless reemerged with Surrender (2017), which featured appearances by Lalah Hathaway and Eric Roberson.
