Originating from Philadelphia, Marc Nelson grew up as the son of Phyllis Nelson, who achieved her greatest recognition with the dance hit "I Like You." While enrolled at the city's renowned High School of Performing Arts, he belonged to the original lineup of Boyz II Men. A solo contract with Capitol yielded his 1991 cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Want You," which became a hit, and the follow-up single "Count on Me" also appeared on the charts. The album I Want You arrived in September 1991, after which Nelson devoted himself to refining his songwriting. Superstar writer/producer/artist Babyface learned of those abilities and drew him into numerous external projects, resulting in songs written for Toni Braxton, Brandy, Jon B, Tyrese, Tamia, Keith Washington, Aaron Neville, and Babyface. Nelson also recorded a duet with Beyonce Knowles for the soundtrack to The Best Man and delivered his second album, Chocolate Mood, in November 1999. The single "15 Minutes" marked his strongest commercial showing, peaking at number 27 on the Top 40.
