Emerging after the dissolution of Sarah Records stalwarts the Field Mice, Northern Picture Library brought back frontman Robert Wratten and keyboardist/vocalist Annemari Davies, who shifted toward a more ambient, trip-hop-flavored sound than their prior work. Wratten and Davies issued several tracks as Yesterday Sky before adding drummer and former Field Mice member Mark Dobson to launch Northern Picture Library in 1993; the EP Love Song for the Dead Che arrived shortly afterward, followed later that year by the album Alaska and, in early 1994, the EP Blue Dissolve. The group issued one final single, "Paris," before splitting amid the romantic breakup of Wratten and Davies, after which Wratten reappeared in 1996 with the solo LP Her Handwriting under the name Trembling Blue Stars.
