ODUMODUBLVCK, born Tochukwu Gbubemi Ojogwu, spent his childhood in Lagos before relocating to Abuja at age 17. The Nigerian vocalist surfaced in 2018 with his debut EP The Trenches and spent the remainder of the 2010s shuttling among trap, Afro-beat, grime, and Afro-pop. He later coined the phrase “Okpoproko Rhythms” to describe the hybrid he created by anchoring these local and global strands with his firm, deep vocals. After releasing the collaborative EP TaDE: The Afro Drill Experiment, which introduced his country’s version of drill, he issued the six-track sophomore EP Time & Chance in 2021, the first project to fully integrate his varied approaches into both sleek earworms and swaggering anthems. Follow-up projects TaDE: The Afro Drill Experiment II and the single “Dog Eat Dog” preceded his late-2022 signing to NATIVE in partnership with Def Jam. Under the new imprint he scored his first chart entry with “Picanto,” then delivered the 2023 singles “Declan Rice,” “Dog Eat Dog II” featuring Cruel Santino and Bella Shmurda, and “Firegun” featuring Fireboy DML. Named after the English footballer, “Declan Rice” resonated in the U.K. and earned a Headie Award for Best Rap Song. The Wale and Bloody Civilian collaboration “Blood on the Dance Floor” topped the Nigerian charts and, like “Declan Rice,” appeared on the chart-topping October 2023 mixtape EZIOKWU. Early 2024 brought further joint releases, among them “No Suffer (3pm in Paris)” with WurlD and the Tiwa Savage-assisted “100 Million.”
