Matti Salo entered the world in Helsinki during 1980 and later built a career as the Finnish rapper Asa. Beginning with his second album, Leijonaa Metsästän, his alternative rap approach—marked by philosophical themes and wide musical range—secured both critical respect and strong sales across Finland.

His first solo project arrived in 2001 under the earlier alias Avain. Issued by Rähinä Records in conjunction with Warner Music, Punainen Tiili adopted a comparatively direct manner and generated the singles “Roihuvuori” and “Yhdes Iltaan.”

After several years away, Asa resurfaced in 2005 on the independent Fried Records imprint with Leijonaa Metsästän. Despite its unconventional character, the album reached number three on the Finnish albums chart and supplied the singles “Leijonaa Metsästän” and “Hidastaa.”

Its successor, Terveisiä Kaaoksesta, appeared the next year and probed philosophical questions even more extensively while relying heavily on live instrumentation. The release still entered the Top Ten, although it signaled a clear reduction in mainstream traction.

Asa next offered the stop-gap promotional mixtape Foetida as a free internet download in 2007. He followed with the fourth album Loppuasukas in 2008, released through his own Roihis Musica label. Once again philosophical and musically expansive, the project involved numerous instrumentalists, climbed back into the Top Five, and drew widespread critical praise.

Issued on the Aseistakieltäytyjäliitto label and credited to Asa & Toverit, Via Karelia proved similarly popular, attaining another Top Five position and yielding the single “Pirii Ja Aseit.”

Steady activity continued into the early 2010s on the Roihis imprint, producing the albums Jou Jou in 2011, Foetida: Use Your Illusion III in 2012, and Rapsodia in 2013.
