Olga Guillot

Olga Guillot, who earned a Latin Grammy along with numerous additional honors, rose to prominence as a leading interpreter of Cuban bolero in the 1950s. Having relocated from her birthplace in Santiago de Cuba to Havana, she teamed up with her sibling to form Dúo Hermanitas Guillot and made her initial appearance on the radio program La Corte Suprema del Arte (The Supreme Court of Art). She pursued musical studies afterward and became part of the quartet Siboney before launching her solo career in 1945 with performances at Havana's Zombie Club. Her breakthrough in the United States came in 1946 through a Spanish rendition of "Stormy Weather." Following her signing with an independent label, she issued her debut recording in 1954, featuring "Miénteme" by the Mexican composer Chamaco Domínguez. Throughout the rest of her discography, numerous releases attained gold or platinum certification. She made history on October 31, 1964, as the first Latin performer at Carnegie Hall in New York. At 87 years old, Olga Guillot passed away on July 12, 2010, in a Miami Beach, Florida hospital.
