Lucha Villa

Lucha Villa stands out as Mexico's leading ranchera vocalist, securing wider acclaim than Lola Beltran through a lengthy and prosperous screen career that complemented her extensive recorded output. Born Luz Elena Bejarano in the mid-1930s in Ciudad Camargo, a town in the state of Chihuahua, she took part in multiple talent contests while still young. Television producer Luis Dillon gave her the professional name Lucha Villa, formed by merging Pancho Villa with the Chihuahua village linked to his own history. An early breakthrough arrived with her interpretation of José Alfredo Jiménez's well-known standard "Media Vuelta," and after several smaller film appearances she rose to prominence via the 1965 cockfighting drama El Gallo de Oro.

Villa devoted herself in cinema, as in song, to rural and ranchera stories, a style that appealed directly to American viewers raised on Westerns. Across the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s she issued dozens of albums and performed in dozens of pictures, among them the 1973 screwball comedy Mecánica Nacional, which earned the Ariel award, Mexico's counterpart to the Oscar. She also released songbook tributes to Jiménez and Juan Gabriel, and Gabriel himself honored her on his 1996 album Las Tres Señoras alongside Lola Beltran and Amalia Mendoza. Villa kept performing even after a heart attack that occurred during surgery in 1997.
