Biography
Antonio Aguilar stood among the foremost Mexican vocalists and performers of his era, releasing in excess of 150 classic mariachi records while appearing in an extraordinary 167 motion pictures across a professional span exceeding fifty years. Known as "El Charro de México," he consistently took the stage and screen dressed in the glittering attire of the equestrian rider, topped by a wide sombrero. His domestic renown found an equal counterpart among Latino audiences throughout the United States, where in 1997 he shattered attendance marks by filling New York City's Madison Square Garden for six straight evenings.
Born Pascual Antonio Aguilar Barraza near Villanueva, Mexico, on May 17, 1919, he learned to ride horses in early childhood and often sang from the saddle. During his teenage years he crossed into the U.S. without legal papers, established himself in Los Angeles, and supported acting and singing lessons by working as a waiter.
After coming back to Mexico in 1945 he first sought training in opera, yet a friend urged him instead to embrace mariachi and "use that powerful voice to sing the songs of the people." Recording sessions began by 1950, the same year he made his screen entrance beside Mexican film icons Pedro Infante and Marga Lopez in Un Rincón Cerca del Cielo. His initial lead role arrived with 1956's Tierra de Hombres, after which he quickly became the leading box-office attraction in Mexican cinema. Routinely portrayed as a rugged yet compassionate cowboy singer, his films also helped bring wider attention to la charreada, the traditional form of rodeo tied to charro heritage.
Between film commitments Aguilar continued to cut new albums. The singles "Caballo Prieto Azabache," "Gabino Barrera," and "Puno de Tierra" elevated him to national stardom, prompting him to write and produce screenplays built around his own compositions. His lengthy union with actress and singer Flor Silvestre further strengthened his appeal; the couple shared numerous pictures, while she independently issued more than 100 albums. His peak commercial period unfolded during the 1960s, when live shows incorporated rodeo demonstrations featuring roping, bull-riding, and clowns, with Aguilar himself displaying exceptional skill on horseback.
In 1969 he returned to southern California for a supporting part opposite John Wayne and Rock Hudson in The Undefeated, marking his sole Hollywood project. The Civil War drama's depiction of Mexican life left him deeply disappointed, leading him to reject every subsequent offer from American studios. Back in Mexico he portrayed national figures such as Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata. Although interest dipped in the 1970s, he experienced a strong revival by the mid-1980s, igniting renewed enthusiasm for the tambora style through the hit "Triste Recuerdo." Three years after his record-breaking Madison Square Garden engagement, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame honoring global sales surpassing 25 million records. His condition deteriorated over the following decade, culminating in a final U.S. tour in 2006. Following a bout of pneumonia, he passed away in Mexico City on June 19, 2007.
