Oliver Cheatham

Oliver Cheatham, a vocalist from Detroit, collaborated with fellow Detroiters Al Hudson and One Way, scoring a Top 40 R&B success via the dance classic “Get Down Saturday Night” on MCA Records. Co-written by Cheatham and One Way multi-instrumentalist Kevin McCord, the jubilant track reached number 37 on the R&B chart in spring 1983. Its follow-up arrived as the sturdy mid-tempo groover “Bless the Ladies,” anchored by a softly singing female chorus repeating the lines “bless the ladies / bless the girls / what would you do without us in this world.” Additional charting singles from Cheatham included the Top 40 R&B hit “S.O.S,” “Celebrate Our Love,” and two duets with Jocelyn Brown titled “Turn Out the Lights” and “Mindbuster.” Other releases under his name comprised “Mama Said,” “Put a Little Love in Your Heart,” “Things to Make U Happy,” and “Wish on a Star.”
