Biography
Having triumphed in the BBC competition to crown Britain’s finest choir, Only Men Aloud quickly rose to rank among the United Kingdom’s most commercially prominent classical ensembles. Established by Tim Rhys-Evans, a classically trained vocalist and one-time director of the Welsh National Youth Opera, the twenty-member Cardiff-based group entered the 2008 series and, following strong renditions of songs associated with Robbie Williams, Tom Jones, and Seal, defeated Ysgol Glanaethwy in the final.
After securing a five-album contract with Universal Records, the ensemble appeared alongside Josh Groban at the Royal Variety Performance and issued its self-titled debut album, which climbed to number 16 on the British charts. The choir then mounted a nationwide tour featuring guest singers Amy Nuttall and Bonnie Tyler, after which it completed the follow-up record Band of Brothers; that release reached number 21 and earned Best Album of the Year honors at the Classical Brit Awards. In 2009 the group extended its reach to the United States via an agreement with CAA—the agency representing David Beckham—and received a personal invitation from Prince Charles to perform at Buckingham Palace. Its third album, Live from Wales, appeared in 2010.
