Biography
Pachy García, a Puerto Rican vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, produces tough, vintage-style dub, dancehall, and roots reggae under the Pachyman moniker, drawing from the pioneering approaches of Scientist and Lee "Scratch" Perry. Residing in Los Angeles, he put out two self-released efforts in 2019 and 2020 prior to inking a deal with ATO Records, which issued The Return of Pachyman the next year. The 2023 album Switched-On channels the formative period of electronic music.
García's formative years in Puerto Rico centered on hardcore punk before his listening habits shifted toward the innovative textures of dub and roots reggae trailblazers such as Scientist, Augustus Pablo, and King Tubby. Once he settled in Los Angeles, he immersed himself in the local Dub Club community while accumulating a collection of classic gear and instruments. During his time as drummer and frontman for the L.A. synth-punk group Prettiest Eyes, García simultaneously tracked his own dub explorations, composing material that blended his affection for older sounds and handling every part himself.
Issued on the independent Permanent Records imprint, his debut Pachyman set In Dub surfaced in 2019. A follow-up, captured in comparable fashion, emerged the subsequent year via the boutique vinyl outfit Mock Records. Called At 333 House after the moniker of his personal studio, the record pushed deeper into roots reggae terrain. As his following expanded, ATO Records extended a recording agreement and put out his third Pachyman full-length, The Return of Pachyman, in 2021. The synth-focused Switched-On arrived in 2023.
