Paradox

Dev Pandya has earned growing stature inside drum'n'bass circles through his Paradox alias, which consistently sidesteps conventional programming rules and rhythmic templates. More than ten years after entering the studio alongside DJ Trax under the Mixrace name to deliver the duo’s first release, The Future Is Before Your Eyes, on Moving Shadow, his productions continue to feature an unyielding percussive focus. Across numerous aliases he contributed to catalogues from 720, Partisan, Archive, Certificate 18, Timeless, and Renegade Hardware before anchoring the Paradox project at 4 Heroes’ Reinforced label toward the end of the 1990s. There he paired with Nucleus for the joint cut “This Side of Forever” and subsequently pursued solo work. Roughly a year later his first Paradox album, The Musician as Outsider, pushed drum construction to extremes on Reinforcement through the Jimmy Castor-referencing “Drum & Chase” and the windswept atmospheres of “Watchful Eye,” both emblematic of an LP whose intricate rhythms were fractured by fragments of outer-space melodic futurism delivered with notable militancy. His second album for the imprint, What You Don’t Know, arrived in summer 2002 and confidently merged midtempo funk with high-impact percussive drum’n'bass—the beats once more supplying the rhythmic core—in an austere, skeletal statement that isolated the genre’s fundamental components. Beyond his Reinforced output, Pandya stands among the rare producers to appear on both sides of drum’n'bass’s informal divide, releasing material on LTJ Bukem’s Good Looking label via the Alaska pseudonym. His debut album under that name emerged in the first months of 1999 on Subject 13’s Vibez imprint, offsetting the trademark rhythmic complexity with warm keyboard textures and expansive atmospheres. An experienced live performer, he first transported his studio setup to stages in 2000 and has since performed across Europe, North America, and Japan.
