Biography
Paul Birken's introduction to electronic sounds came during childhood through a trip with his father to a Roland exhibition. Accumulating funds from newspaper ads, he purchased used synthesizers and drum machines to construct a modest studio anchored by his Commodore 64. Drawing from mid-'80s synth pop and early electro broadcasts, he mastered machine programming to replicate the radio tracks he admired. After completing his studies in 1990, Birken relocated from Burnsville, Minnesota, to the University of Minnesota Duluth, where the region's snow also attracted him; as a pioneering snowboarder, he secured sponsorship from the emerging Burton company in the early '90s.
Duluth introduced Birken to dance music when the Midwest techno movement was expanding. Attendance at a Minneapolis rave expanded his horizons and directly shaped his subsequent productions. A demo submission to DJ and producer Woody McBride led to his debut outing in 1995 on McBride's Communique Records. The double-pack 12" Surfin' Superior aligned with the hard, acidic techno emerging from the Midwest. Speaker Freaker followed in 1996 on the same label, after which Birken placed further material with Hi-Pass, People of Rhythm, and Milwaukee's Drop Bass Network.
Tonewrecker Recordings was established by Birken in 2001 to issue his own work alongside contributions from DJ ESP, Tony Rohr, and Bam Bam. Throughout the 2000s he maintained output while managing employment and family responsibilities, yet a renewed audience discovered his catalog amid the early 2010s resurgence of harder techno. The 2012 Midwest Whippersnappers EP, recorded with Freddy Fresh, surfaced on Ireland's Earwiggle and preceded additional releases the next year on Mord, Candela Rising, and Brothers. Hardware-only performances drew invitations across Europe and the United States, taking Birken to venues including Tresor, Berghain, and House of God.
