Biography
Within the Texas hip-hop scene, Paul Wall has earned recognition for rhymes that mix affability with braggadocio, voiced through a pronounced drawl ideally matched to the syrupy rhythms he prefers. A DJ drawn early to the innovations of DJ Screw, he rose through Houston’s Swishahouse imprint alongside Chamillionaire. Local and regional traction preceded wider exposure via Mike Jones’ platinum-certified “Still Tippin’,” which paved the way for solo crossover with the Billboard 200-topping The Peoples Champ (2005). Momentum continued through a guest spot on Nelly’s Grammy-nominated “Grillz,” a number-one pop single that also boosted Wall’s custom-grill enterprise, and the Top Ten follow-up Get Money, Stay True (2007). After additional Swishahouse releases, he moved to independent status and has largely remained focused on street-oriented tracks suited to relaxed cruises and celebratory gatherings. Prolific output has encompassed more than two dozen subsequent solo albums, duo projects, mixtapes, and EPs; frequent collaborator Termanology joined him on Start 2 Finish (2022) and Start Finish Repeat (2023).
Born Paul Slayton, the rapper absorbed the woozy, slowed-down remixing approach of fellow Houstonian DJ Screw so thoroughly that standard-tempo hip-hop initially sounded foreign. He began rapping and DJ’ing in the late ’90s, handling street-team promotion, party spins, underground mixtapes, and half of the Color Changin’ Click with Chamillionaire before national breakthrough. The duo issued Get Ya Mind Correct in 2002; Wall followed with the solo Chick Magnet in 2004. Later that year, Mike Jones released a version of “Still Tippin’” featuring Wall and Slim Thug that reached number 60 on the Billboard Hot 100 and later attained platinum status. While that single climbed, Controversy Sells, another Wall-Chamillionaire disc, appeared and preceded the September 2005 Atlantic release of The Peoples Champ. The chart-topping album yielded gold singles “Sittin’ Sideways” and the Top 40 crossover “Girl.” Around the same period, Wall appeared on Nelly’s number-one pop hit “Grillz,” which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.
Get Money, Stay True, issued in April 2007, became Wall’s second Top Ten album. Its straightforward style yielded charting singles “Break ’Em Off” (featuring Lil’ Keke) and “I’m Throwed” (featuring Jermaine Dupri), plus “Drive Slow,” originally heard on Kanye West’s The College Dropout. Two further solo Swishahouse albums followed: Fast Life, which debuted at number 15 on the Billboard 200 in May 2009 and balanced party cuts with the introspective “Daddy Wasn’t Home,” and Heart of a Champion, which entered at number 58 just over a year later, half of it produced by blink-182 drummer Travis Barker. Establishing Paul Wall Music, he shifted to full independence with #Checkseason in 2013 and issued solo albums annually for the next three years. The Po-Up Poet, a joint effort with producer June “The Jenius” James, was followed by Slab God (featuring Snoop Dogg and Devin the Dude) and the Houston Oiler (spotlighting Z-Ro, Slim Thug, and Chamillionaire). Bounce Backs Over Setbacks closed out his 2010s studio output, a decade that also included co-billed projects with Baby Bash and Statik Selektah plus assorted mixtapes.
Entering the 2020s as a veteran Houston figure, Wall maintained a steady release pace. Mind Over Matter and Subculture, his 11th and 12th solo studio albums, both surfaced in 2020, as did the Lil’ Keke collaboration Slab Talk. The solo Hall of Fame Hustler arrived the following year. In 2022 he reunited with Termanology for Start 2 Finish and with Baby Bash for the third installment of their Legalizers mixtape series; another Termanology project, Start Finish Repeat, appeared in 2023.
