Biography
With a baritone delivery that pairs smoothness and menace, Houston rapper Z-Ro blends hip-hop and R&B through candid accounts of street existence, personal bonds, and romance. His recording career began in the late 1990s, and his second album, Z-Ro vs. the World (2000), marked his first chart entry, initiating an extended association with Rap-A-Lot Records. Under that Houston imprint he placed nine projects on the Billboard 200, beginning with The Life of Joseph W. McVey (2004) and encompassing the five-part drug series that opened with Crack (2008) and closed with Angel Dust (2012). After establishing his own 1 Deep Entertainment imprint, Z-Ro has issued subsequent work through that outlet, including the full-lengths Drankin' & Drivin' (2016), No Love Boulevard (2017), and The Ghetto Gospel (2024). On the R&B/hip-hop singles chart he has appeared both as a guest—on Bun B’s “Get Throwed” and Slim Thug’s “Gangsta”—and as lead artist on tracks such as “Top Notch” and “Never [These Days].” The Missouri City upbringing that earned him the nickname Mo City Don remains central to his identity.
Born Joseph Wayne McVey, he relocated from Houston to nearby Missouri City during childhood and absorbed influences ranging from the Geto Boys and 2Pac to Sam Cooke and Babyface. Early involvement with the Screwed Up Click, the Houston collective founded by the late DJ Screw, preceded his solo debut, Look What You Did to Me, in 1998; he maintained a near-annual release schedule for nearly twenty years thereafter. The Rap-A-Lot signing yielded his label debut, the eighth album overall, with The Life of Joseph W. McVey in 2004. Let the Truth Be Told followed in 2005, featuring Juvenile, Ashanti, and frequent collaborator Paul Wall, and reached number 69 on the Billboard 200. The drug-series sequence—Crack, Cocaine, Heroin, Meth, and Angel Dust—spanned 2008 to 2012, with Crack becoming his highest-charting set at number 48 and housing the number-62 R&B/hip-hop single “Top Notch,” a duet with Pimp C.
Independence arrived after The Crown in 2014. Drankin’ & Drivin’, released in 2016 on 1 Deep Entertainment, entered the Top Ten of the R&B/hip-hop chart and the upper half of the Billboard 200; Legendary appeared before year’s end. Following his 21st album, No Love Boulevard, in 2017, Z-Ro declared retirement, only to return swiftly with album 22, Codeine. Output stayed consistent with Sadism, Rohammad Ali, and Pressure arriving in quick succession. In 2024 he delivered The Ghetto Gospel, one of his most polished statements, which includes appearances from longtime associates Mike D, Paul Wall, Lil’ Keke, and Mýa.
