Biography
Rapper Lil' Keke emerged in the early 1990s as a protégé of pioneering turntablist DJ Screw and helped establish Houston rap collective the Screwed Up Click. Working alongside DJ Screw and fellow members of that crew, Keke shaped the regional underground sound throughout the decade while also developing techniques that later reached audiences far beyond Texas. His own recordings gained immediate traction, highlighted by the 1997 debut album Don't Mess wit Texas, which moved more than 40,000 copies in Houston. Over the following years he maintained an unrelenting output of mixtapes, full-length projects, and chopped-and-screwed versions of his material, appearing on multiple imprints until he joined Swishahouse Records in 2005. That affiliation reinforced his reputation as an underground mainstay, and he kept issuing new work for years afterward while mentoring artists who followed in his wake.
Marcus Lakee Edwards entered the world in 1976. From his Houston base he began rhyming in the early 1990s and became a founding participant in the informal Screwed Up Click. Early sessions with his associate DJ Screw placed him at the center of the chopped-and-screwed production approach as it crystallized. His first solo album, Don't Mess wit Texas, reached stores in 1997 after the single "Southside" had already stirred strong local interest. Powered by the track's broad appeal, the project achieved major regional success and established the template for the brooding, bass-heavy street sound Lil' Keke would refine across subsequent decades.
A steady procession of mixtapes and albums appeared in the years that followed, among them 1999's It Was All a Dream, the atmospheric 2001 set Peepin' in My Window, the 2004 joint effort Bad Company recorded with Shorty Mac, and numerous additional titles. The 2005 move to Swishahouse led to the 2008 release Loved by Few, Hated by Many, a star-studded album featuring Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Pinc Gator, and additional guests. Distributed through parent company Universal, the project represented one of his most widely visible efforts, yet it was surrounded by a continuous stream of other albums and mixtapes issued both before and after its arrival. Further major releases such as 2010's Addicted 2 Fame and 2012's Heart of a Hustla were accompanied by interim remix collections, freestyle mixtapes, and shorter projects.
Lil' Keke sustained the pace with 2014's Money Don't Sleep and 2016's Slfmade; a twentieth-anniversary edition of Don't Mess wit Texas appeared in 2017. That same year President Obama acknowledged his extensive community-service contributions in Houston. He extended his catalog once more in 2018 with Slfmade II, which incorporated appearances by Bun B, Slim Thug, Daz Dillinger, Big K.R.I.T., and additional artists.
