Hailing from Garden City, Texas, the rapper J-Dawg, whose birth name is Larry Wayne Jones, Jr., entered the scene during the early 2000s by first aligning with Swishahouse before linking with the Boss Hogg Outlaws. That Houston-area collective, established by Slim Thug, encompassed J-Dawg alongside Young Von, C. Ward, and additional members. Through the group J-Dawg contributed to multiple Boss Hogg Outlaws projects across the 2000s and early 2010s while also appearing on tracks alongside Chamillionaire, Pimp C, and further notable Southern artists. Following an extended period spent mainly in ensemble settings, he issued his debut solo mixtape, Behind Tint, Vol. 1, in 2008. Consistent with Houston rap conventions, the release appeared in both standard and screwed editions. That project prompted additional volumes in the Behind Tint series, including Behind Tint, Vol. 2 in 2010 and Still Behind Tint shortly afterward. Years later J-Dawg maintained his output with the 2015 mixtape Connected and Respected, Vol. 1 and the 2016 joint album Dark Days Bright Nights alongside Underboss.
