Pepe Kalle, born Kabasele Yampanya, stood out for both his imposing physical stature and his commanding musical presence. Equipped with a multi-octave vocal range and an energetic stage persona, the six-foot-three, three-hundred-pound singer produced over three hundred songs and twenty albums across a twenty-year career. Audiences knew him fondly as “the elephant of African music” and “La Bombe Atomique,” responding enthusiastically to his powerful live shows.

He first developed his voice in a church choir and received guidance from Joseph Kabasele, “Le Grand Kalle,” whose household he joined in return for lessons in music and singing technique. His initial professional appearance came as a member of Kabasele’s group African Jazz; in the 1970s he launched his own ensemble, Bella Bella, alongside vocalist Nybomba, who later joined Sam Magwana’s African All Stars. The most significant phase of his work unfolded during the 1980s through his performances with Empire Bakumba.

As an entertainer he became noted for the lighthearted onstage banter he shared with the dwarf Emauro. Although he focused chiefly on his own band, he also recorded with Zaiko Langa Langa and musicians from OK Jazz.
