Tshala Muana rose to prominence as the foremost vocalist in Mutuashi, the Afro-Cuban-influenced dance music originating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where her reputation rested equally on provocative stage costumes and choreography. Elements drawn from Baluba folk traditions likewise shaped the evolution of her distinctive sonic identity. She passed away on December 10, 2022, in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, at the age of 64.
