Biography
Beginning his professional career at the tender age of 14, Phil Leadbetter gained recognition through his work as a sideman in multiple traditional bluegrass ensembles. Among his early achievements that year were a position at the theme park now known as Dollywood, located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and a performance at the White House for President Gerald Ford. Subsequent engagements found him performing with ensembles such as the Vern Gosdin Band, the Grandpa Jones Band, and New Dawn, which served as the official band for the 1982 World's Fair held in Knoxville. Starting in 1991, he contributed to multiple recordings by J.D. Crowe and the New South, one of which was the 1994 Grammy-nominated release Flashback on Rounder. Critical acclaim greeted Philibuster, his debut solo album, which highlighted his technically proficient and soulful Dobro technique through an entirely instrumental format. On October 14, 2021, at the age of 59, Phil Leadbetter passed away following a diagnosis of the COVID-19 virus.
