Biography
Pistol Grip came together as punk revivalists in the Los Angeles underground during 1997, fronted by the fierce vocals of Stax. The group, still enrolled in high school at the time of its formation, issued its first recording the following year on one side of the split Sounds of the Street, Vol. 1 alongside local street punks Fully Loaded. Steady growth of a hometown following through word of mouth eventually attracted the notice of BYO Records, which released the band’s debut full-length, The Shots from the Kalico Rose, in May 2001. That album displayed the youthful vigor of a lineup—guitarists Hollywood and Chase Revenge, bassist Slowey, and drummer Boxcar—whose sound drew from late-’70s acts such as the Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, and Sham 69 while also incorporating a strain of Cali punk in the manner of Bad Religion. National touring alongside Union 13, the Business, and Youth Brigade, together with an appearance on that summer’s Warped Tour, helped extend their reach beyond California. In spring 2003 the band returned with its second album, Another Round, now featuring guitarist Chris in place of Revenge. Several months afterward the live DVD The Show Must Go Off! Live at the Glass House, the seventh installment in Kung Fu Records’ series, supplied fans with concert footage until the third BYO release, Tear It All Down, arrived in August 2004.
