Biography
PLOSIVS delivers punk rock with forceful impact while retaining melodic lines and vocal harmonies throughout its songs. This supergroup draws its lineup from Rocket from the Crypt, Pinback, and Against Me!, creating music built on twin lean and wiry guitars, bubbling basslines, and driving drums that support concise, hook-driven compositions. Angular yet accessible, the material pairs urgent, introspective lyrics with a direct approach captured cleanly on the band’s 2022 debut full-length.
The project originated in a songwriting partnership between John Reis, whose résumé includes Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes, and Drive Like Jehu, and Rob Crow, co-founder of Pinback. During the period they termed “distance rock,” when the COVID-19 pandemic and related upheavals halted touring, in-person rehearsals, and new releases, the pair turned to creating fresh material as a constructive outlet. They then recruited bassist Jordan Clark of Mrs. Magician and drummer Atom Willard, who had previously played with Reis in Rocket from the Crypt and served in Against Me!, the Offspring, and Angels & Airwaves. Naming the quartet PLOSIVS—a consonant-focused twist on “Explosives”—Reis and Crow assembled an album’s worth of tracks before convening with Clark and Willard at San Diego’s Singing Serpent Studio to record. Following the group’s first live appearance at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach, California in November 2021, PLOSIVS issued its debut LP on Reis’ Swami Records imprint in March 2022.
