Biography
Po' Girl's sound merges country, blues, folk, alternative rock, and jazz inflections. Lazy melodies, sweet harmonies, and mellow grooves suggest their style, yet the freewheeling group consistently reveals unexpected turns. The band's origins trace to winter 2000, when a steady stream of musicians passed through the East Vancouver house occupied by Trish Klein. Allison Russell numbered among them. Klein and Russell saturated the space with music and recognized the need to develop their partnership past informal living-room sessions. Klein's three-year commitment to the Be Good Tanyas and Russell's work with Fear of Drinking postponed that step. By 2003 both prior projects had entered indefinite hiatuses, allowing Klein and Russell to establish Po' Girl. Hightone issued the self-titled debut, after which the duo embarked on extensive touring. Diona Davies joined in 2003. The following year Vagabond Lullabies appeared on the Nettwerk label. Home to You, released in 2007, examined the bittersweet pull of life on the road.
