Biography
Echoing the warm, introspective style of indie folk figures such as Iron & Wine and Laura Veirs, along with countless aspirants chasing the legacy of Elliott Smith while sidestepping his tragic conclusion, Sera Cahoone articulated a personal artistic aim in her official press materials: to register as "a musical love child of Buck Owens and Cat Power." Growing up in Denver's suburban surroundings in Colorado, she first took up drums at eleven and devoted her adolescent period to a string of area groups that frequently included Roger Green, who would later join the Czars, as well as the emerging indie folk singer/songwriter Patrick Park. After finishing school she relocated to the Pacific Northwest and entered the artsy indie rock ensemble Carissa's Wierd, notwithstanding its conspicuously irregular spelling. Over multiple releases that grew ever more ornate and refined, the band cultivated a devoted underground audience before disbanding in 2003 once principal member Jenn Ghetto departed to focus on her individual endeavor S. While contributing drums on occasion to the related project Band of Horses, Cahoone composed and tracked her debut solo album under her own name during 2005. Initially issued independently, the record later reached wider circulation through Sub Pop Records, where it attracted substantial critical notice and cleared the path for the 2008 successor Only as the Day Is Long on the same label. That effort likewise earned favorable notices and preceded her next Sub Pop outing, Deer Creek Canyon. With the 2017 release From Where I Started she shifted from Sub Pop to Lady Muleskinner Records.
