Although the Australian indie rock outfit first appeared in 2021, its four musicians share a much longer shared past. Essentially a continuation of Melbourne cult favorites the Ooga Boogas, Power Supply brings back the complete original lineup and softens the earlier group’s jagged garage-rock approach into something still robust yet noticeably gentler. The quartet’s debut full-length, In the Time of the Sabre-toothed Tiger, arrived near the end of 2021.

After the Ooga Boogas dissolved near the start of the 2010s, the musicians scattered across separate bands and side projects. Singer and guitarist Leon Stackpole attracted attention with his own recordings issued under the name Leon. Guitarist Mikey Young appeared with Total Control and Eddy Current Suppression Ring, bassist Richard Stanley performed in Drug Sweat, and drummer Per Byström became part of Voice Imitator. Once Stackpole’s solo work began drawing larger audiences, he gradually enlisted his former bandmates to accompany him on tour.

Having effectively reassembled the Ooga Boogas to perform Leon’s songs live, the musicians rebranded the group as Power Supply and finished recording their initial album. Issued in 2021, In the Time of the Sabre-toothed Tiger introduced a steady Velvet Underground pulse to the band’s inherently forceful garage-pop sound.
