Biography
Under the Profligate alias, Noah Anthony merges noise-laden EBM with industrial techno while also pursuing refined darkwave pop. Releases from the outset, notably the 2014 album Finding the Floor, showcased his command of abrasive club sounds, whereas later projects such as 2018’s Somewhere Else and 2020’s Too Numb to Know revealed a growing emphasis on crafted pop structures.
Long active in experimental electronic circles, Anthony formed one half of the psychedelic noise rock duo Social Junk alongside Heather Young and contributes to the trio Form a Log with Ren Schofield of Container and Rick Weaver, where the focus lies on fractured, playful techno and abstract sound pieces. Between 2009 and 2012 he staged D.I.Y. performances and issued many cassettes of unsettling rhythmic noise under the Night Burger name; toward the close of that endeavor the style shifted into an industrial and minimal wave framework. Profligate extended this trajectory, surfacing in 2012 via the album Come Follow Me on More Records and Hot Releases together with the more dancefloor-oriented 12-inch “Videotape” on Not Not Fun. The Red Rope EP appeared on DKA Records the following year, joined by the “Can’t Stop Shaking” 12-inch issued jointly on Gooiland Elektro and Enfant Terrible. Not Not Fun delivered Profligate’s second album, Finding the Floor, near the end of 2014, and Unknown Precept put out the weighty techno EP Extremities in 2015.
Wharf Cat released Profligate’s third full-length, Somewhere Else, early in 2018. Considerably more song-oriented than prior material, it featured increased vocal presence and live instrumentation. The same direction continued on 2020’s Too Numb to Know, which added acoustic instruments and contributions from Matchess, Gel Set, and Lazy Magnet.
