Biography
Born Ida Guillory on 15 January 1929 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA, Lewis sang Louisiana French songs during childhood and first took up the accordion in the years immediately following World War II. After her family relocated to San Francisco and she married, music played almost no part in her life until 1976. That year she and her brother Al Rapone began performing together at local parties; an invitation to appear at a Mardi Gras event soon followed and opened the door to additional engagements. Lewis secured a contract with GNP Records in 1976, after which she recorded numerous albums and toured Europe regularly with her Bon Ton Zydeco Band. Her style of zydeco proved more approachable than the music of many Louisiana artists, earning her wide popularity outside Louisiana.
