Dominick Fernow, who runs Hospital Productions, crafts lush ambient techno under the Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement name alongside his other endeavors, which include harsh noise as Prurient and dark industrial techno as Vatican Shadow. The project’s output delves into environmentalism, magic, and mysticism while drawing on field recordings and deep basslines shaped by dub traditions. RSE first surfaced in 2011 through a run of cassettes on Hospital that carried over some of Prurient’s abrasiveness yet introduced slow, pulsating drum machines and vast layers of reverb. Vinyl editions began in 2013, among them Black Magic Cannot Cross Water on Blackest Ever Black, Folklore Venom, and the more rhythm-oriented Water Rose Above the Head, issued via Fernow’s Bed of Nails imprint. He then concentrated on other projects and label responsibilities until RSE resurfaced in 2016 with the triple album Green Graves, a set far more meditative and relaxed than any prior Fernow release. The early catalog was later remastered for the cassette box Water Witches, with most titles also appearing on vinyl. In 2017 came Ambient Black Magic, which included contributions from Silent Servant and a Substance remix.
