The Yellow Swans, an electro-noise duo, came together in Portland, Oregon, during 2001 to fuse punk's defiant posture with glitch's abrasive electronic textures. Peter Swanson and Gabriel Mindel Saloman, in the manner of countless other noise acts, handled the self-release of numerous CD-Rs and cassettes while placing EPs and 7"s through imprints such as Collective Jyrk and Chronditic Sound. The pair tracked their debut album in 2003 even as they maintained a steady schedule of performances and tours alongside Tussle, 7 Year Rabbit Cycle, Xiu Xiu, and Japanther. Narnack issued Bring the Neon War Home in summer 2004, shortly after the duo relocated to Oakland, CA, just ahead of that launch. Psychic Secession, their follow-up album, surfaced in fall 2005 on the Australian label Numerical Thief before Load Records remastered and reissued it later the same year. Additional CD-Rs and 7"s appeared steadily across 2006 and 2007, reaching a peak with the third album, At All Ends, whose sound reflected a smoother, Krautrock-inspired direction. Swanson declared the project's dissolution the next spring. Two years afterward, Type released the duo's final album, Going Places.
