Biography
Reg Schwager, a guitarist whose contributions to music hold considerable weight, has nonetheless pursued much of his career while residing quietly in Toronto, Canada. His approach to the instrument stands apart, embodying a deep command of jazz’s full lineage, spanning eras from pre-swing to the free jazz period—an insight honed in part through studies alongside pianist Cecil Taylor.
Recognized early as a prodigy, Schwager began appearing on Canadian stages alongside vibraphonist Peter Appleyard while still in his mid-teens. That early acclaim opened doors to collaborations with Pepper Adams, Jon Hendricks, Hank Jones, Junior Mance, Jimmy McGriff, Zoot Sims, George F. Benson, J.R. Monterose, Chet Baker, Dave Young, Rob McConnell, and Oliver Jones, in addition to an extended stint as a member of George Shearing’s ensemble. He maintains the guitar position within Toronto’s Dave McMurdo Jazz Orchestra, for which he frequently supplies original compositions and arrangements.
