Reginaldo Rossi

Reginaldo Rossi, a leading figure in the brega repertory, drew enormous crowds to his live shows, among them an audience of 80,000 at Salvador’s Parque de Exposições. He launched his career in 1964 with the Silver Jets amid the rising Jovem Guarda movement, following earlier stints as an engineering student and math teacher. His debut album appeared on Chantecler in 1965, yet commercial breakthrough arrived only with the 1967 single “O Pão.” After composing 50 songs that ranged from protest material to Italian romantic ballads, he embarked on a tour across Brazil. Lasting acclaim followed with “Mon Amour, Meu Bem, Ma Femme,” later re-recorded more than 50 times; further major successes included “A Raposa e as Uvas” and, above all, “Garçom.” Ultimately Rossi placed more than 300 compositions with record labels, maintained an average of 25 shows per month throughout Brazil, and released over 50 albums that earned 14 gold certifications, two platinum awards, one double-platinum certification, and a diamond record. In the 1970s he stepped away from the youth-music circuit to concentrate on the sentimental style known as brega. Although dismissed in the Southeast—chiefly Rio and São Paulo, Brazil’s dominant cultural centers—he retained a vast following in the Northeast. During the 1990s a Jovem Guarda revival and a broader shift in audience and critical tastes restored interest in his catalog, confirming Rossi’s status as an inventive artist and spurring the reissue of 18 previously unavailable albums.
