Biography
Rett Madison channels longing into her passionate adult alternative songs through a soulful performance approach colored by blues and a subtle twang. Formative trauma and questions of identity shaped the West Virginia native’s first album, Pin-Up Daddy, which she cut alongside musicians from Vulfpeck and Dawes. Her follow-up LP, One for Jackie, arrived in 2023 and paid tribute to her late mother.
An Interlochen Center for the Arts graduate, Madison started tracking her debut in Michigan in 2018 under the guidance of Vulfpeck’s Theo Katzman, who handled production and played drums. The songs drew from her West Virginia upbringing and addressed identity, grief, and trauma, while Lee Pardini of Dawes and Vulfpeck bassist Joe Dart also contributed. She premiered the title track in late 2019 before issuing the full set herself in September 2021. During that period she issued the standalone holiday track “I Don’t Wanna Know Christmas Without You,” on which she played Rhodes piano, Katzman handled drums, Nick Campbell of Nick Campbell Destroys and Pomplamoose played bass, and Ryan Lerman, known for work with Ben Folds and Michael Bublé, played guitar.
Now based in Los Angeles, the songwriter crafted her next album as a tribute to her mother, who died by suicide in 2019. One for Jackie was produced by Lerman and came out in October 2023 via Nashville’s War Buddha Records, an imprint of Warner Records. Shortly afterward she joined Grace Potter’s tour as an opening act.
