Biography
Citing Stevie Wonder and James Taylor among his key influences, singer-songwriter Rick Price built a thriving solo path after years spent as a backing vocalist for Marcia Hines, Jon English, Dragon, Kerrie Biddell, and Jade Hurley throughout the 1980s. National recognition arrived in 1988 when he joined Keren Minshull to perform Australia’s bicentennial anthem, “Celebration of a Nation.” His solo work commenced under Sony Records in 1991 with a trip to Los Angeles, where he collaborated with producer Chris Lord-Alge and an array of acclaimed American session musicians. The resulting debut album, Heaven Knows, yielded the hit singles “Not a Day Goes By,” which reached number five in April 1992, and “Heaven Knows,” which climbed to number six in August of the same year. Price reentered the Top 40 in 1993 via a cover of the Left Banke/Four Tops classic “Walk Away Renee” and a duet with Margaret Ulrich titled “Where Is the Love?”
Sales momentum soon gathered across Asia and Europe, where critics drew favorable parallels between Price and singer-songwriters such as Bryan Adams and Richard Marx. Heaven Knows appeared in Japan at the close of 1993, and Price took the stage at the well-received Wizard of Oz concerts there alongside Margaret Ulrich and Yothu Yindi. The track “Heaven Knows” subsequently topped the charts in Malaysia and the Philippines, earned Song of the Year honors at the Singapore Music Awards, and moved more than 250,000 units throughout Southeast Asia. His follow-up album, Tamborine Mountain, arrived in 1995, and its single “River of Love” peaked at number 18 on the Australian charts.
