Rob Dickinson, cousin to Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson and, far more significantly, the guitar-playing frontman of Catherine Wheel, launched a solo career several years after the band called it quits following five albums. Fresh Wine for the Horses appeared in 2005 on Sanctuary, the imprint run by Catherine Wheel manager Merck Mercuriadis, yet it quickly vanished from availability once the company ceased issuing new recordings. Bob Ezrin, who had previously collaborated with Catherine Wheel on the 1997 album Adam and Eve, prompted Sanctuary's parent company Universal to restore the record to circulation. A revised edition surfaced in June 2008 that reordered the track list, added the previously unheard song "The End of the World," and included a bonus disc of solo renditions of six Catherine Wheel staples such as "Black Metallic," "I Want to Touch You," and "Crank."
