Robert Lamm, a keyboardist and vocalist born in Brooklyn, earned his widest recognition through decades with Chicago. His musical path nevertheless started early, as he learned piano without formal lessons and sang in the Brooklyn Heights choir. While attending high school he performed with several bands, then moved to Chicago to enroll at Roosevelt University for studies in theory and composition. Early in 1967 he joined the band Chicago, opening a chapter that would span more than thirty years. Alongside his work with the multi-platinum group he issued solo albums from time to time, among them Skinny Boy in 1975, Life Is Good in My Neighborhood in 1995, and In My Head in 1999. After the 2000 release of the collaborative album Like a Brother with Gerry Beckley and Carl Wilson, he shifted primary focus to his own projects during the 2000s. He remained in Chicago and maintained a steady schedule of solo releases that began with Subtlety & Passion in 2003. Those relaxed, electronica-tinged recordings later formed the core of the 2017 compilation Time Chill: A Retrospective.
