Biography
The Royal Crown Revue, a retro-swing ensemble, featured vocalist Eddie Nichols, guitarist James Achor, bassist Veikko Lepisto, tenor saxophonist Mando Dorame, baritone saxophonist Bill Ungerman, trumpeter Scott Steen, and drummer Daniel Glass. The band's initial release came in 1991 via the album Kings of Gangster Bop, positioning them just ahead of the swing revival's peak in the late 1990s. Their major-label breakthrough arrived with 1995's Mugzy's Move on Warner Brothers. A live recording from 1997 titled Caught in the Act spawned the cult favorite "Barflies at the Beach." The Contender followed in 1998 and included the track "Zip Gun Bop (Reloaded)." In 1999, Walk On Fire showcased the group's most polished sound, utilizing authentic vintage gear such as original "44" ribbon microphones. After fruitful performances across Japan and Australia, the ensemble marked the occasion with the 2001 live album Passport: Live In Australia.
