Biography
As the standout act among Slimstyle Records' offerings, swing revivalists the New Morty Show sustain a lively momentum. Originating in San Francisco yet immersed in Las Vegas flair, the expansive New Morty ensemble—trumpeter and band leader Morty Okin, vocalist Kat Starr, vocalist Vise Grip, bassist Tom Beyer, tenor saxophonist Dave Murotake, drummer Kevin Stevens, trombonist Van Hughes, baritone saxophonist Tom Griesser, guitarist David Metzner and pianist John Quam—has evoked the spirits of Louis Prima and Woody Herman from the mid-'90s onward. The group's first release, Mortyfied, appeared in March of 1998, followed that same year by a brief on-screen turn performing selections from the album in the Francis Ford Coppolla film Jack. Straight Ahead and Rigomorty arrived in 2000.
