Biography
Hailing from Ontario, soulful Canadian singer/songwriter Ruby Waters blends raw, bluesy alt-rock with folk and pop elements, delivering them through commanding grit and introspective depth. Music releases began for her toward the close of the 2010s, yet broader recognition arrived via her second EP, If It Comes Down to It, which secured a Juno Award nomination for Alternative Album of the Year in 2022. Her first full-length project, What's the Point, followed in 2024.
Shelburne, a modest Ontario community famed for its yearly old-time fiddling competition, was where Waters grew up. As the child of two country musicians, she developed her own abilities early and started performing locally while still in her early teens. Among the maverick figures from prior generations who shaped her approach are Amy Winehouse, Nirvana, and the Rolling Stones. The soaring rock ballad “Sweet Sublime” marked her initial track to attract notice and later featured on her debut EP, Almost Naked, issued in 2019. By then she had already served as an opener for City and Colour on Canadian dates.
Issued nearly a year afterward in October 2020, her next EP, If It Comes Down to It, reached a wider listenership in part through the breakout single “Quantum Physics.” Live shows and festival slots throughout 2021 further expanded awareness of her work, culminating in the 2022 Juno nomination for that second EP. Later the same year she issued a third EP, Heather, before turning attention toward her first album-length collection. Crafted alongside longtime collaborator Sam Jackson Willows, What's the Point appeared in May 2024.
