Biography
A garage pop trio rooted in Los Angeles, SadGirl fuses gritty yet melodic material that channels the late-1950s peak of early rock with the raw edge of D.I.Y. punk. Singer and guitarist Misha Lindes leads the group, which maintained a consistent run of favorably received singles and EPs from 2014 through 2018 before inking a deal with the veteran indie Suicide Squeeze and unveiling its first full-length album, Water, in 2019.
Born in London to Hal Lindes, the onetime Dire Straits rhythm guitarist, Misha Lindes moved to the United States at age seven. While growing up in L.A., he began making music alongside fellow local Dakota Peterson. After spending a few years at art school in Britain, Lindes came back to Los Angeles and asked Peterson to team with drummer Paul Caruso, thereby rounding out SadGirl’s roster. The band’s sound marries a rebellious punk attitude with affection for early rock, pop, and surf styles; its recorded introduction arrived via the 2014 single “Breakfast Is Over.” In the ensuing years SadGirl released numerous singles and EPs—most often on cassette or vinyl and chiefly through the Hard Feelings! imprint—while building a reputation as an intense live unit and attracting internet listeners through tracks such as “Breakfast Is Over” and “Little Queenie.” After signing with Seattle’s Suicide Squeeze, the trio delivered the 2018 single “Breakfast for 2,” which resurfaced the following year on the debut LP Water.
